The origin of the surname Grantham is uncertain, although it is said to probably be Old English, meaning grand. The surname had its beginning with the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain - Granta+ham meaning Granta's Village appeared as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book. Grantham is a town located in the County of Lincolnshire. The first documented Grantham families can be found there where they were said to have held a family seat from very ancient times - some researchers say well before the Norman Conquest.

Our Grantham family research focuses on:

Edward Grantham - who was born sometime around 1643 and died sometime around 1704. He lived most of his life in Surrey County, Virginia - and was known as Old Edward. The family home was known as Grantham Reeds and was located directly across the James River from Jamestown, which was founded on May 14, 1607.

Edward Grantham, II - who was born around 1686 im Surrey County, Virginia and died around 1768. He and his wife Katherine Proctor were first settlers near the Neuse River in North Carolina.

John Grantham - was born around 1725 in Surrey County, Virginia and died around 1781 in Wilkes County, Georgia. He married Ann Brown in Edgecombe County, North Carolina sometime around 1745. John Grantham was in the North Carolina Militia and served in the Revolutionary War. He received a land grant in North Carolina (600 acres) for his service.

William Grantham - was born about 1753 in North Carolina and died there around 1800.

William M. Grantham - was born 1783 in Georgia and died 1863 in Marshall County, Alabama. He married Susannah Richardson.

Jessie Richardson Grantham - was born 1833 in Harris, Union County, Georiga and died 1904 in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas. Jesse brought his family out west (first to Kansas and then to Texas) after his plantation was burned to the ground during Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War. Jesee Richardson Grantham married Susan Adeline Parks.

Hillard Cisero Grantham - was born 1854 in Union County, Georgia and died 1939 in Callahan County, Texas. He married Margaret Dickson. He came to Oplin and Tecumseh area with his wife Margaret Dickson and sons from Arkansas in 1891. He acquired several tracts of land in the area making his home place west of Oplin. Hillard and Margaret were very active in community and church work.

George Washington Grantham - was born 1877 in Gentry, Benton County, Arkansas and died 1954 in Premont, Jim Wells County, Texas. He married Beulah Viola Rogers.

Vira Lorene Grantham - was born 1919 in Oplin, Callahan County, Texas and died 2009 in Fort Bend County. She married first Thomas Orvil Atwood and second Leonard Lee Setliff.
